AI and Art

Communications of the ACM

AI is comprised of two ingredients: algorithms and data, and "Both of these are man-made," said Tony Fernandes, founder of HumanFocused.AI and CEO of UEGroup, a design company that employs artists. "People are fascinated to see what happens when both are allowed to run on their own and to look at what they generated,'' Fernandes said, adding that creating art requires inherent human influence. "To say that AI creates art is to say that anyone can replicate the work of Picasso," he said. "What makes Picasso's work relevant is the human spirit, imagination, and desire for expression. Picasso experimented with cubism to achieve something new.

AI and art -- are creators about to become redundant? – DW – 02/01/2023

Australian singer Nick Cave came out strongly against an AI-generated track "in the style of Nick Cave" sent to him in January by a fan. It is "bullshit," said Cave. Meanwhile, three female fine artists recently filed a class action lawsuit in the US against several AI companies, charging them with theft of creative ideas. There's no doubt that artificial intelligence is making its way into the art world. While the consequences remain uncertain at this early stage, artists are already concerned about the appropriation of their intellectual property.

We need to think bigger about AI and Art

#artificialintelligence

Whether you're on the'AI art is art' camp or the other, this is a tool that will forever change the creative industry for better or worse, and it has arrived. If you're fortunate enough to not know anything about this technology, a number of machine learning / AI research labs have created AI systems that allow computers to generate images. These tools are mostly experimental and nothing close to being able to create what humans can create -- until now. It's something that the digital art field has paid close attention to and is going to change art in ways we could never expect. From abstract art, digital painting, complex sculpture, architectural visualisation or 5 years old hand drawing, whatever you ask for, the AI makes it, or at least tries its best to.

We Need To Think Bigger About AI And Art - AI Summary

From abstract art, digital painting, complex sculpture, architectural visualisation or 5 years old hand drawing, whatever you ask for, the AI makes it, or at least tries its best to. Does that cheapen the value of someone who puts their hands in researching, planning, sketching, developing their artworks; versus an AI just learning that from having studied millions of existing images and figuring out what we humans like to look at, and replicating that in mere minutes? You can create artwork without specifying colour or even form of your subject, and simply allowing the AI to take the reins, while you only provide inspirations and mood you wanted to achieve. It's not perfect though, as you will quickly notice; it can not, at the moment at least, understand nuance interactions between human culture, and everything that is presented in the resulting image is based on learning from what people created. Allowing it to run without supervision will in turn create a visual language in our society that might encourage bigotry and biases, and limit true creativity that inspire progression through diversity.

AI and Art: The Collaboration You Never Saw Coming – Chatbot News Daily

#artificialintelligence

We use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve methods in sectors ranging from banking to medicine, but there's one industry where it may not initially seem like a good fit: the art world. When most people think of AI, algorithms and chatbots, automation comes to mind, whereas people usually associate creativity, passion and perspective with artistic works. However, there are numerous instances of people combining art and AI for surprising results. Let's take a look at some of them. Some of the criticisms raised about art made by AI assert that it defies some of the things people ordinarily attribute to art that determine its value.
